Asian studies 12
This week most of the time was used to work on our projects, However we also had a great discussion on the parliament voting that the grave found in the residential schools is not a genocide. It was basically the NDP vs the Conservatives in this vote because many of Liberal party members did not vote including PM Justin Trudeau. I thought that the Liberals doing this really shows how little they care about this situation. It also makes me feel angry because it seems like the Liberals are just doing this so they don't make other people made so they don't lose votes.

This week we had discussions on how Asian countries dealt with colonization and imperialism. It was interesting to see that all the countries had a different way of dealing with European influence. I had realized that all of acts of colonization were because of greed and to make as much money as they could. Its really interesting to see that humans have always been in love with riches for longest time.
This past week the most impactful thing was listen to the story of Lola. This story was about a Filipino slave in modern history moving to America with family she was serving. This story was narrated by the son of the family she was serving. He considered Lola at the same level as his mother. It really hurt me to listen to her story because of how she was treated and verbally abused almost everyday. Even after the narrator's mother died Lola kept doing work. It showed how it was ingrained in her to do work. I found it interesting to see even though everything his mother was putting Lola through she never showed any resentment and she was always very selfless.
This week we had discussed about the Israel-Palestine conflict. After doing much research I found that this situation was very detailed, complicated and unfortunate. I think that it is wrong what is happening to Palestinians right now. They are being removed from their homes and new Jewish families are moving into their homes. After protesting against this they are ruthlessly being shot with rubber bullets. The whole country is at a brink of civil war between the Israeli government and the Terrorist group Hamas. They started bombing each other.
On Thursday we listened to a presentation about the Chinese pirate Ching Shih. She was a very powerful and influential person who had many followers. I found her really cool because she was the first female pirate I had ever heard of. Even though she was had done many bad things in her life I was still very inspired by her journey. She had started off her career as a Prostitute but ended it as a Noble woman.
Through the week we had discussed colonization of asian countries. The era of colonization and imperialism is the reason that people around the world live their life the way they do. Most of the countries that did colonize these countries in Asia were European countries. The colonizers thought they had to bring education and salvation to people around the world that he deemed uncivilized. This was known as the white mans burden. I was really frustrated with this because they had no right to that. It caused nothing but violence and hatred and it striped people from their land and heritage.
This week we discussed racism against asians. The first day we had a class discussion on how people in the class had dealt with racism. I said that racism in todays world can be verbal and physical, however racism now a days is more silent. They change their body language around different people of colour and even though they aren't saying anything we can still see what they are thinking. The second class we had watched a video about asian hate crimes around Canada. It was shocking to see that especially in Vancouver asian hate crimes have increased do to covid. The third class we split into groups and we brainstormed ways to help prevent asian hate crimes. These were the ideas that we brainstromed.
